Elevenses Spring Tea
March 25, 2023

The Frankston Garden Club recently enjoyed a morning of English fun with its Elevenses Spring Tea. Taking their cue from our friends ‘across the pond’ the Frankston Garden Club hosted an elevenses tea as a fundraiser. Elevenses is a tea served around 11 a.m. in the morning and is a late-morning work break that involves a light snack of food like muffins, scones, cookies along with hot tea or coffee. This sold out event was held at the Bank-Quet Room Event Center located at 126 West Main Street in Frankston. The Bank-Quet Room is a historic bank that has been renovated into an event venue, with a combination of classic and rustic decor.

Tables for the tea were decorated by individual club members who used fine china, linens, flowers and decorations from their own collections to create whimsical and unique table designs. Many of the attendees added merriment to the event by wearing elegant, lovely and interesting hats and fascinators.

Guests were served with a variety of teas, including Earl Gray, Hibiscus Tea and Raspberry Tea. Strawberry Spring Salad, and a variety of sandwiches were also served with tea cakes, teapot shaped butter cookies with pink icing and pistachio cookies. After the reading of a teacup story, guests selected three winners in the hat contest, choosing the pretties hat, the most elegant hat and the funniest hat. The three lucky winners were Peggy Melrose for prettiest, Julie Melrose for funniest and Carolanne Szumal for most elegant. Each winner enjoyed a teacup for a prize.
Participants played Tea Party Bingo with winners enjoying a variety of prizes. Other attendees went home with lovely winnings from a silent auction and raffle items donated by many local and surrounding businesses.

The Frankston Garden Club is thankful for the donations and contributions they received from many generous businesses and for the support of the public that make it possible for the work they do. Proceeds from this event will go towards the club’s scholarship program and a variety of other community centered endeavors.

Commemorative Christmas Ornaments
In 2021 the Frankston Garden Club decided to design and offer Commemorative Christmas Ornaments. It’s the first in what we hope to be the line of many for years to come. Each year members of FGC come up with ideas of historical significance to the area of Frankston, and those suggestions are voted on, designed and made. The Frankston Garden Club has a booth at Frankston Square Fair each year where we have the ornaments ready to sell. We also have them available to purchase any time throughout the year by calling Judy Scoggins at 817-913-1982 or Sheila Mays at 214-662-9981. We not only have the current year for purchase, but also past years available.

2023 Primitive Baptist Church $15.00
Third in the FGC Commemorative Christmas Ornament series is the Primitive Baptist Church also known as the Pilgrim Church which is the oldest Baptist church in Texas, located 5.5 mi. S on SH 155, then 0.5 mi. E on CR 327, Frankston, TX. On the back of this beautiful ornament is the historical maker.

According to the historical marker, the Rev. James Madison McCarty (1802-1869) is the first Primitive Baptist minister known to have served in this area. In 1853 Bethel Primitive Baptist Church of Christ was established as a member of the Union Association organized by Daniel Parker. Church services were held one weekend a month. Members of the congregation participated in holy services of communion and foot washings during conference meetings. Singing for the services was performed in the non-instrumental sacred harp method. The church was the primary religious and social gathering place for the Sandflat community. The oldest documented burial in the Bethel Cemetery is that of the infant child of Daniel and Elizabeth Willingham Cook, who died on August 7, 1855. Among those buried in both marked and unmarked graves in the cemetery are veterans of the Civil War, World War I and World War II. After the railroad was built through the county in 1900, bypassing this area in favor of Frankston to the north, the Sandflat community began to decline. Worship services at Bethel Church ceased in the 1940s. The cemetery remains as a reflection of the area's heritage.

2022 The Park Gazebo $15.00
The Frankston Garden Club's second Commemorative Ornament features the Park Gazebo. A gazebo was built around 1920 and became the site of different social events in Frankston. The square continues to serve as the town’s social and business center. The park was designated with a
According to the historical marker, in 1900 the Texas & New Orleans Railroad built a line through this area and plotted a townsite here on land owned by Frankie Miller. The town was named for "Miss Frankie" who donated this site, known as the Town Square, for a city park. By 1908 a city park existed here, and a post office and many of the town's earliest businesses had opened around the park square. A gazebo, built about 1920, replaced a small bandstand and became the site of various local festivities and social events. The park square continues to serve as the town's social and business center.
2021 Frankston Garden Club Logo $15
Frankston Garden Club's first commemorative Christmas Ornament is the yellow Knockout Rose, which is our official flower for Frankston Garden Club. The Frankston Garden Club was established in 1967, when it became affiliated with the Texas Garden Clubs, Inc.

Home Flower Garden Tour 2013
May 24, 2013

The Frankston Garden Club hold its first-ever Home Flower Garden Tour on Saturday, May 25, 2013. The tour will feature four gardens in the Frankston area, including two on Lake Palestine.

“The homeowners are excited about it, our club is excited about it and the community is excited about it,” Frankston Garden Club garden tour chair Lina Mae Eschberger told the Herald-Press Tuesday. “What better medicine than to go out and see God’s beauty everywhere — it refreshes your body, mind and soul.”

The tour will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine and will feature the following gardens:
• J.C. and Reba Hicks and Judy Hicks McNeil — 333 Kickapoo St. in Frankston
• Monroe and Trudy Menke — Lollipop subdivision, 22501 Cherry Lane, Frankston
• Raymond and Una Mae Nichols — 570 N. Weldon St., Frankston
• Terry and Hope Ramsey — 6701 HCR 4216, Frankston

“Each garden is different and even if you think you have time to see one garden, I think it will be worth your time,” Eschberger said. “It’s a wonderful outing for men and women to come and just be refreshed by the fresh air and take a walk through the gardens, that may bring back some childhood memories while enjoying the gardens, the birds and the butterflies.”
Admission to the event is $8 per person. Tickets can be purchased at Sav-Mor Foods, David’s Beauty Salon, from any Frankston Garden Club member or at the entry of any featured garden.

“The Ramseys have a lot of old-timey plants. They live in Lake Palestine and they have a gorgeous long driveway with roses and all kinds of pass-along plants,” Eschberger said. “The McNeil garden has the feeling of an English garden with lots of old-timey pass-along plants you can’t buy anymore. Her grandmother was a real passionate gardener and that’s where she got her love for that.”
Proceeds from the tour will go to the Frankston Garden Club Frankston High School Scholarship Fund.
“It’s for a wonderful cause. We think it’s an investment in our youth to do these fund-raisers. We try to do something the whole community would enjoy while benefiting deserving students who need a little help going to college,” Eschberger said.
