Frankston High School Senior Scholarship Award

Frankston Garden Club handed out certificates to the winners of our scholarship program today, May 19, 2023 at the Frankston High School Awards Ceremony. Because of our successful fundraisers the last two years, we were able to increase the number of scholarship recipients and monetary value of our scholarship this year. The 2023 Frankston High School Garden Club Scholarship Winners are (L to R) Christopher Hale 2nd place $750, Debbie Edmonson FGC Vice-President, Henry C. Suggs 1st place $1,000, Judy Scoggins FCG President, Isaac Yates 3rd place $500, and FGC member Caroline Vornberg.

Congratulations to all three, of the winners and best of luck for a very bright future. If you, or someone you know is an upcoming senior at Frankston High School and are attending college or technical school, be sure and apply for our scholarship for 2024.  For more information see your school counselor. The 2024 essay theme is “Compare how gardening has changed from the early 1900’s to today.”

 

 

Texas Garden Clubs, Inc., gives annual scholarships to Texas resident students who are college-level juniors or above.  The applicant must have at least a 3.25 GPA and be majoring in a field of horticulture.  The fields of horticulture included are floriculture, landscape design, horticulture, botany, biology, plant pathology, forestry, agronomy, environmental concerns, city floriculture planning, land management and other allied subjects.  Remember!!  The application deadline is October 1 for a scholarship given the following spring/winter semester.

Grants were set up in honor of the following:  Nellie Day Trigg, Bess Buchanan, Florence H. Thomas, Mary Badham Kittel, Hazel Raske, Francis Ellis, and Ethel W. Spears.  These Scholarships are given on a rotating basis in their respective names.  These Scholarships continue to grow as the 315 member clubs give yearly to the Scholarship program thereby increasing the principle.

Announcing 2024 Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl Poster Contest

POSTER CONTEST

Grades:  1 – 5

Theme:  Woodsy Owl “Lend a Hand – Care for the Land” and Smokey Bear “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires”

Here is what YOU and YOUR students can do to help the environment.  Children from first through fifth grade are invited to participate in the 2023 National Garden Clubs, Inc. Poster Contest!  The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. are giving students the opportunity to demonstrate through original drawings of Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl their understanding of wildfire prevention and basic environmental conservation principles.

“ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT WILDFIRES!“

Smokey Bear is recognized nationally and internationally as the symbol for fire prevention. The original Smokey Bear appeared in 1944.   Smokey’s message, “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires!” encourages personal responsibility for fire prevention.  Smokey Bear teaches children and adults to be careful with campfires, barbecues, trash fires, and matches.

NGC SCULPTURE CONTEST

Grades:  4 – 8

Theme:  “Keep America Green”

For grade 4th – 8th and home schooled are eligible.
Sculptures to consist of recyclable, reused, and reduced materials.
Width can be no more than 8 1/2 x 11 inches.
Height should be in proportion to width.

Scale of Points: 
60 points creative use of materials and self expression.
30 points description of sculpture and materials used.
10 points craftsmanship and technique.
